Myanmar Discovery Programs

We hope you will join us for our very special Myanmar Discovery programs, which include the amazing archeological city of Bagan, historical Mandalay, the pine-scented hills of Kalaw, and beautiful Inle Lake ringed by hills. The expedition to the Golden Rock is an adventure. Seats are limited to only sixteen (16) participants per tour.

Day 01,  Arrival into Yangon

Our guide will meet us after customs. Transfer to the hotel for a well earned rest.
Hotel Accommodation: Panorama Hotel or similar.

Day 02,  Yangon- Golden Rock

Morning Alms, Golden Rock, SLaiAfter breakfast leave your hotel by 8:30am. (Leave luggage not needed with hotel bell desk) and drive to Golden Rock with short visits in Bago on the way. The highlights in Bago included of Kyakhatwine monastery, the busy bursting Bago local market, and the snake temple before continuing to the Kimpun base camp. Transfer to a local truck ride to the middle camp and hike up to the summit (about 45 minutes – 1 hour steep hike). Visit the temple just before sunset.

Day 03,  Golden Rock- Yangon

After breakfast, hike down the hill to the local truck station. You will be passing many monks seeking alms. Return to Yangon with extensive visits in Bago on the way. The highlights included of Shwemawdaw and Shwetharlyaung temples, the Hamsavatti Palace site and Kyaikpun pagoda. Return Yangon late afternoonMeals: Breakfast @ hotel

Day 04,  Yangon – Mandalay

Ideally an early morning flight from Yangon to Mandalay with a very early morning transfer to the airport. Upon arrival Mandalay, proceed for a full day visit to three ancient cities: Amarapura, Inwa island buggy tour, and Sagaing Hills. Visit Mahagandaryon monastery of Amarapura at 1015am. (Home to over 1000 monks and last meal of day is 10:15am) Optional visit to the weaving factory on the way to Inwa jetty. Take a short ferry ride and the 2.5 hour buggy tour on the island of Inwa visiting Maenu Brick monastery, the leaning tower of Inwa, and massive teak monastery of Bargayar Kyaung. Return to the car and drive to Sagaing for visiting U Min Thoneze and Soon U Ponnya Shin pagoda of Sagaing Hills. Return to Amarapura in time for the evening stroll on the centuries-old U Bein footbridge

Day 06,  Mandalay – Boat to Bagan

Early morning transfer to Mandalay jetty for your boat trip to Bagan. Boat departs at 7:00am. The duration of this boat trip will vary depending on the water level – approx. 8 to 9-hrs from June to November and 10 to 12hrs from December to March. Shortly after leaving Mandalay, the boat will pass Sagaing, a religious
sanctuary, studded with numerous glittering stupas, monasteries, & nunneries, and the historic Ava Bridge built by the British in 1934. Then, the boat will pass by the island of Inwa, an ancient capital of Burmese, Shan, & the Mons, with it towering Palace Watch tower, and the remarkable yellowish Maenu brick monastery. You will see interesting activities of the local people on this life-line of Myanmar…fishing
boats, river sand miners, river villages, cargo boats carrying pottery to rice and cans of edible oil, teakwood barges, and occasional bamboo rafts. The boat will stop at
two bigger river towns of Myinmu and Pakkoku where local merchants sell regional goods and seasonal fruits. As you approach the land 11th ~ 13th century’s ancient temples, the riverbanks are noticeably higher. You know you are approaching Bagan as small Bagan era stupas and temples, towering temple pinnacles and the bright golden dome of Shwezigon pagoda appear along the eastern bank of the river. Disembarked at a jetty located near the old city and transfer to the hotel. (driver only)

Day 07,  Bagan

Meet your local guide after breakfast at 0830am and start a full day guided tour to the temple studded plains of Bagan. The highlights included of Nyaung-U local market, Shwezigon and Kyansitthar cave, Htilominlo and Anandar temples before lunch break. In the afternoon, visit to a lacquer factory (optional) and more temples including Abyeyadanar, Dhamayangyi and Sulamani temples. Enjoy sunset view from a temple top.

Day 09,  Bagan to Pindaya Caves - Kalaw

Early morning transfer to airport for flight to Heho. On arrival Heho, your driver will pick you up for the 1 hour drive to Kalaw, a cozy old British Hill station, with its pine scented hills. Spend the evening just enjoying this small town. Along the way visit Pindaya Caves, ancient natural limestone caves, filled with over 8,000 of ancient Buddha images in different style and material.

Day 10,  Kalaw – Inle Lake

Your guide will discuss options with you for a half day trek to surrounding farms, hills, various hill tribes. Drive to Nyaungshwe in the afternoon and check-in hotel.

Indein Ruins, S OrloffDay 11,  Inle Lake full day boat tour

Full day tour on the beautiful lake by private boat to see a colorful 5-day market where the hill tribes come to exchange their goods with the lake residents, the Jumping Cats (Nga Phe Kyaung) monastery, the region’s most revered Paundaung Pagoda, traditional silk weaving looms at Inn Paw Khon village, the silversmith village, and the impressive ruins of Inn Dein village. While on the boat tour, you will also observe the unique lifestyle of Inn Thar people… the leg rowers and fishermen, and Inle Lake’s famous gardens, and homes on the lake.

Free morning at the small but busy town of Nyaungshwe (short treks, biking, winery visits) Afternoon flights to Yangon, transfer to your hotel.

Day 14,  Yangon

Book Store, M RyanVisit the city tour sites including the great Shwedagon Pagoda, Botataung Riverside pagoda, Sule pagoda and the downtown sections / China town area, Chaukhtatgyi and the reclining Buddha. Time for shopping! The Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) offers souvenirs and more. Bargaining is required!
